Behavioral Benefits  

Behavioral benefits are increasing school performance and decreasing incentive to smoke among student smokers. Understanding the symptoms of smoking are depression, anxiety, and anger, which could negatively affect a student's learning ability, passing a campus smoke-free policy will help students avoid these symptoms to achieve success at school. Student smokers are more likely to quit smoking when spaces to smoke are eliminated, demonstrating a potential decrease in smoking prevalence on campus.*

Environmental Benefits

Environmental benefits are decreasing tobacco litter and toxins on campus. Tobacco litter carries toxins, which could negatively affect air quality. There have been past reports of tobacco litter and toxins on campuses. For example, approximately 24,000 cigarette butts, which carried at least 50 million toxins, were found at San Diego State University in 2010. Ever since 2014, San Diego State University has adopted a smoke-free policy and has completed erased tobacco litter and toxins on campus. Therefore, passing a smoke-free policy will help promote campus beautification and will ensure the campus is cleaner and safer for the environment.

Health Benefits

Health benefits are reducing the risk of smoking-related illnesses and of contracting with COVID-19. Smoking is associated with increased severity of heart disease, bronchitis, lung cancer, blood clotting, death, and even, a higher risk of covid. Therefore, passing a smoke-free policy will promote health equity, ensuring the campus community is moving toward a healthier lifestyle. *
